Medicinal purposes

Well, they say that laughter is the best medicine. So this is especially for you, KC, if you are homesick!

*Photobucket.com is excellent! So much better than Hello!!! I can post gif, jpg, png, bmp and swf images too! And I can underline the text!!! I can't do thaton blogger!

Enough to feed a family of 4...

...for 2 weeks or even a month!!!!! That's how much this board game costs!!!!

It costs RM249.90!!! But i bought it with a 10% discount.

No, no, no, no - I did not buy it for meself. I was doing a fren a favour!!!! I thought I can buy it and then go thru it first. But I... I just can't bring meself to open it! It is still in mint condition - the technical term is "MIB" - mint-in-box!!!!!

Hopefully, we can play it next week-end! Woohoo!!!!

Starving...

This is always a difficult time of the year - the period in between the English Premier League football seasons!!!! Suddenly, after weeks of having at least 3 footie EPL matches to watch every weekend, there is none! Not a single one. Saturday nites are never the same.

We, EPL fans will have to wait til August before the new season starts. In the meantime, we try to satisfy oursleves with the rumours regarding which team is buying which player for how much!!!!

We are starved of FOOTBALL!!!!!!

Well, thank goodness there are other things to keep us occupied - like the Wimbledom Tennis! Every nite, I sit by me TV watching talented players dressed in predominantly white, push each other to the limits known only in the tennis world. It has been entertaining thus far!

Another thing to keep us satisfied (barely) was the the Confederations Cup! I caught the finals early this morning! Wat a game!! Of course, as a pure English supporter, I was on the side of the team which wore their familiar yellow-blue strips! Yup, the World Champions won the Confederation Cup! They won it by 3 clear goals!!!! Yup, the final score is 4-1!!!

Of course, the team in white and blue stripes tried very hard to launch a "comeback" - but not every team are as talented as Liverpool!!!!! Besides Liverpool, which team can come back after being down 3 goals in a cup final???

Here's a tribute to the Brazillian goal-scorers:-

After a full meal...

Me mom's a Cantonese - so that makes me half a Cantonese. The Cantonese have this saying about people who have nothing else better to do - they are described as those who have eaten until they are full and then find they do not have anything to do!!!!

Well, if you have eaten to your heart's content and find you have nothing else to do, try out the Ultimate Star Wars Personality Test here!!!

I did it and here's the result:-

Other than the "hair" part, I think it describes me pretty well, dun u think? I quit my lawyering job, seeking for sumthing greater!!!! Strong in the force, am I?

Come on, KC - do the test even tho I know that you have loads of things to do after eating until you are full!!!!

The last breakfast?

It was Wednesday – so that meant that it was movie day for me! After all, the tickets are sold at a reduced price on Wednesday – almost 50% discount!!!

So I actually got up early – I had oredi planned it. I was gonna watch “Spellbound” at the International Screen at Midvalley. There was only 1 show – 11 am. Thereafter, I was gonna catch “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” – at 2 pm!

But at bout 9:30 am (yes, I was wide awake then), I received a call. A mate was coming over to have breakfast wif me!!

Wha..??? Whoa!!!! Hold it, hold it! Yes, I’m awake but no, I’m not free. I’m going for me movie.

I had to watch it this week cuz I won’t be around next Wednesday. The following Wednesday oso doesn’t look good, wif all me travelling plans in July.

However, the fren was pretty insistent! Yes, there went my movie plans.

The food was nothing great – Rawa Thosai, Nasi Lemak and 4 cups of “teh-tarik”. RM8.80. A bit steep, isn’t it?

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
(In case some of you are wondering, this is "teh tarik" - tea wif condensed milk served in a glass. The foam on the top is made by pouring it from a glass to another)

Still, how do you put a value or a price tag on time spent wif frens? You just can’t. Time spent wif frens are priceless. It doesn’t matter wat the food is, where the place is (or how bad the toilets were!!!! Ugh…). Wat matters is the sharing, the catching up, the joking, the reminiscing.

So, I missed a movie. It’s just a movie. No regrets. I had a great breakfast – and looking at how things are (wif me going away soon), this could be the last breakfast I’ll ever have wif this mate. I’m glad she came over and spent time wif me!

p/s – I managed to catch “Hitchhiker’s Guide” later on in the day. Good show. But read the book. It’s cornier!!!

The Last Supper!

(note: if you read some other blogs wif a post of the same title, know for a fact that I came out wif the title first!)

We had our final supper together on Monday nite – the Church Camp committee. We had our final meeting on Monday nite and as usual, we adjourned for supper.

I was quite sad that we won’t be having any more meetings or suppers as a committee. By far, this was the most enjoyable camp committee I’ve served wif. We can actually be a TV series! – “The Committee”!!! Yup, we had all the usual characters to make an interesting storyline!!!

As wif all groups, we had the capable leader (eg. Aragorn from LoTR, Captain Miller [Tom Hanks] in “Saving Private Ryan”, etc.). JN was simply excellent as our chairman. He was always down to earth, he was brave (made a lot of decisions which others may not have dared to), he was sensible - never emotional, and he led us well. He had our respect.

Then, we had the wise advisor (eg. Gandalf from LoTR, Obi-Wan in the original trilogy, etc.)! TEH was the “veteran” – he has served in probably all the camp committees. His experience was invaluable. JN even joked that he would not have taken the role as the chairman if TEH was not gonna be part of the team! Besides having the wisdom, TEH oso had a super sense of dry humour – and he never fails to leave us all in stitches wif his dead-pan delivery of excellent one-liners!

Then we had the “specialists” (usually in war movies where we have a bomb expert or a sniper) – members of the team who are there because they are skilled in one area. While they may not be wise or talented, they do have a specific gift which they used to serve God wif.

We oso had an irritating fella – yeah, the one who is not a bad guy (in the same team) but yet always causes internal problems. We had this brother who was quite full of himself – he must have a say in everything, and when his views are not accepted, he’d get angry and bitter – and would even try to start arguments. When things go wrong, he’ll be the first to find fault wif other members. However, he did his job and I guess he taught us all how to bear wif difficult people.

Then of course, there are those who are there for comic relief!!!!

Me? I think I was the “jack-of-all-trades” fella. After all, I joined the comm without a specific port-folio and since I was the one without a permanent full-time job, I’m usually the one who had to do everything else that din really require a specialised skill. I was oso the emotional character who raises “controversial” matters – like during the final review meeting, I raised up the issue of a certain church leader who behaved very unbecomingly (IMHO) during the camp!

We worked hard together, we prayed together, we served hand-in-hand, we had many moments of great fun and laughter, we shared a strong unity. It was indeed a great joy to see all our efforts no in vain when we went thru the survey forms – only 1 person indicated that he/she did not learn much from the camp. The rest all indicated that they had been so blessed.

Truly, all glory to God – for unless the Lord build the house, the builders labour in vain (Psalms 127v1)!

And I’ve been so blessed to be able to serve and to learn from my fellow workers!

Lemon

Lemons - pic obtained from freefoto.com Posted by Hello

Don't you just hate it when you order sumthing and get sumthing else? Like "teh-tarik kurang manis" but it comes like sugar water. Or you go to Maybank mamak and order a piece of fried chicken thigh but instead get a chicken wing!!! And you have waited so long for it so you'd just settle for it. Or how bout you order fried kway teow (rice noodles) without "see hum" (cockles) and it comes covered wif it!!! Or you order prawn mee and you get prawn meehoon!!!!

(The examples are made to remind certain people in the UK of wat they are missing! Yes, evil! Muahahahaha!!!)

The same is when buy sumthing and then it does not work well! Aaargghhhh!!!!! Like how one of me mates would say, you get a lemon!!!!

I used to think that this kinda things ALWAYS happen to me - until I stopped to reflect bout it and realise that I'm just remembering the bad things - I mean, I have bought a lot of stuffs which does not give me any problems. o I guess I shud be thankful.

Still, I have to go back to Low Yat 2moro and return the DVD-rom drive I bought a couple fo weeks ago. Yeah, the same one which I proudly installed meself! No, no, no - nuthing wrong wif the installation (at least that's wat I think)!

It was alrite when I watched some DVDs last week. But I finally got meself to sit down and do my "Lost" marathon session today. And yeah, the drive couldn't read the DVDs well. It was choppy, the sound goes on and off - you get the idea? So maybe it's the WMP's fault. I tried PowerDVD and the same thing happened. I took out the DVD and tried it on the WMP on me laptop. No problems! Sigh...

At least I finally get a reason to go to Berjaya Times Square to use up my Starbucks coupon 2moro.

Check, please!

I just got back home. Spent the entire afternoon playing cards wif me mates. JT will be going back to the US 2moro- and this was our “last session” wif him! Played a game of hearts and Big 2 (“Chor tai ti”). Mikes was the loser for both! It was quite amusing as for the first time ever, we actually counted points when we played Big 2. so it was a mater of getting rid of all the “power cards” fast! At the end of the game, sumtimes throwing out a single card is better than throwing out a pair – for a piture card is worth more that a pair of 4!!!!

It was fun.

Suddenly, before we knew it, JT had to go – family dinner. We said hasty goodbyes.

And that was it!

Earlier in the morning, our “foot-in-mouth” elder (oops, he did it again today by offending some Singaporeans in our midst!!!) prayed for the 3 Musketeers who’ll be leaving us this Friday to Penang – The Science University of Malaysia.

Just last month, we said goodbye to 2 of our mates who are now in Sheffield (I heard that they are so busy that when they shit, they dun have time to wipe their … nvm).

In 2 weeks time, another mate will be going back to Singapore.

And not long from now, it’ll be my turn.

Can’t believe all this is affecting me!!!!

But it is.

Sigh... all things must come to end, doesn't it?

It’s weird. Last year, at this time, I was all ready to go. Due to some … things … I just couldn’t wait to leave. But God had other plans for me and me studies were deferred to this year.

In the span of less than a year, things have changed so much. I got to know so many people better and frens whom I thought were “long-gone” came back. I re-establish some pretty good relationships and made some wonderful new ones too.

Now it is hard to leave. Saying goodbye is never easy – especially when I dun plan to come back anytime soon!

I’m not looking forward to it – well, not as much as I was last year!!!!

Thank God I have mates who are there – and I can’t wait to meet up wif them again.

It would have been so easy last year and I’d left without missing much.

Still having said that, I prefer it this way. I thank God so much for the frens I’ve made and the frens who’ve returned to my life. I thank God for the deeper relationships I have now.

And as much as I doubt it very much, I just hope things will never change. It is possible – dun you have frens whom u never talk to for years and then suddenly, a call comes, you meet up and when you do, it was as if the years in between never really happened and things were exactly the way it was.

I hope so. I really do.

At the very least, I know I’ll see them all again when we all go home to be wif our heavenly father. :-)

Free refills!

Went out for a drink wif a couple of me mates last nite – at McDs. The wonderful thing was that they were giving free refills – for all drinks! I had 3 cups of coffee! :-)

The outing itself was pretty simple – yet it was nice and it was prolly the last time the 4 of us – JT, KP, J.May and meself will ever be out together again. JT will be leaving back to US on Monday and I’ll be gone in a couple of months time.

KP and J.May will be starting a new phase of their life – working! Tho KP may defer it for further studies.

Sigh… well, we all grow up some time and we all have to go towards the path that we have chosen.

Just 2 other somewat unrelated things I wanted to blog about:–
McDs is selling the plastics bracelets!!! However, they are selling it in different colours and it has some corny words on them – like “Fear Not”, “Young at heart” etc. It’s being sold for RM2.90 and only RM0.10 of it will be donated to charity. Yeah, Golden arches will swallow up the remaining RM2.80!!!

Now when ppl see me wif me yellow bracelet, they’d prolly thing think I got it from McDs!!! Ugh…

Another thing – as we walked out of McDs (carrying our coffee), we noticed a strange thing. The moon was ORANGE in colour!!!!

Strange. It prolly just shows how polluted the air is. :-(

Oh, at about 20 mins past midnite, I received a text message! Who would text me at that time of the nite? I was actually driving home then. It was me “orange-mate” – who texted me to ask me to look at moon!

Yes, I shell think of you whenever I see an orange coloured moon!

Service with a smile

Yes, it's the time of the year for Tennis again - the best of all the Grand Slams (IMHO) - Wimbledon!!!

And it has been a great tournament!!! Big players knocked out – Justine, Nadal, Safin, unknown players (to me) pushing big names to the brink, Henman loses (no big surprise, eh?), the Brits have got a new hero, Federer drops a set!

I enjoyed watching the new young players. The big stage does not seem to faze them at all. Instead, they played well and gave the seeded players some scares! It was evident that they lost due to their inexperience.

Still, it was nice to see their fresh skill, and players like Santangelo and Bracciali who turn away smiling when they lost a point to an unbelievable shot by their more famous opponents – instead of throwing tantrums and sulking like the millionaires do!!!

Well, the first week has ended and I haven’t got enuf of it! Hopefully, next week will be just as entertaining!

Here's a tribute to the hitherto unknown players:-

Haynes giving Serena (in a horrible pink dress - no doubt she designed it herself) a good scare in her first game!

Santangelo - following in Haynes' footsteps!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Mirza - lost to Kuznetsova but won over a lot of fans! Yours truly included!

Bracciali - played an excellent game, only to lose to an Excellent Roddick!

Tursonov - the man who silenced the Centre Court!!!! No big deal - he just defeated Henman, tt's all!!!! (see the Wimbledon logo on his shirt? I read that he had to borrow the shirt as all of his were stolen earlier!!!)

Indigestion

I was watching lonely Planet on the Travel & Living channel and Megan visited the Arab countries. At Oman, she actually stopped by the grave of Job!!! Wat a coincidence as I have just completed reading the book of Job.

I have always find Job to be a difficult book to read. When I read Job’s frens’ comments, I find that I agree wif them a lot! It is oso difficult for me to imagine a person like Job who did not sin – for after all, all have sinned!

But wat really bothered me a lot was the premise of the whole thing. Megan described Job as one who got caught in between God and Satan – which is not so far from how I view it!

I mean, is the book of Job to be taken literally? In my training, I have to answer “Yes”. There is nothing to imply that Job was a fictional character and that he did not really go thru wat the book said he did.

So if it is literal, then the image of God really disturbs me:-

Please forgive me, Lord, for I do not mean any disrespect. I am searching for answers.

Sure, Job has got some really important lessons for us today:-

******

After typing those last words above, I actually stopped to read those chapters again. And as I did, God’s Holy Spirit seemed to have given me an answer.

In those few chapters, God challenged Job – after all, Job all the while maintained that he was being punished for sins that he did not commit. Yet God reminded him (and me) of his sovereignty, of his power, of his wisdom – and of who we are compared to him.

Who are we to question him? He is, after all, GOD!

It’s almost like (but necessarily so) if he wants to use us as pawns, why not? Do we have the right to question him, or his motives?

Sometimes, most of the time, I view God in an imbalanced manner – he is a God of love, he is my abba father, he is my true friend. But he is oso the great God! The King of all kings, and the Lord of all lords. Who can grasp his infinite wisdom?

Who am I to question the God of all creation of his actions?

Gluttony (Episode 3)

Well, all good things comes in 3s, rite? 3 wishes, 3 stooges, LoTR trilogy, Charlie’s Angels…

The 3rd movie is “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”. Here are 5 reasons why you should watch it:-

(5)

Hehehehe… ok, ok. It oso stars that guy from the Heineken ad! Nope, not the one wif Jen. The other one – wif Jen’s ex!

To be fair, he was pretty good too!

I can’t believe the critics who actually went to watch this movie and tried to take it seriously!!!! Of course, the plot has got holes! This movie obviously does not want to be taken seriously! You want good, serious, educational, inspiring, moving movie? Watch “The Passion of the Christ”, or “Ghandhi”, or “The Killing Fields”, or “Braveheart”.

You want eye-candy, entertaining, funny movie? This is the movie for you! Having said that, I thought Angelina did quite a good job in acting – when her character tried to hid her feelings for Brad’s character.

Pics obtained from FilmHai.de, posted using photobucket

Gluttony (Episode 2)

No, no, no more gluttony. Just a continuation from me previous post entitled Gluttony.

I’ll continue wif “Batman Begins”.

Lemme say that I’m not big fan of Batman (unlike a certain corn-eating mate). It din help that I never really liked the previous Batman movies. In fact, the only one I enjoyed was panned by the critics as the worst Batman ever – Batman & Robin (hey, I’m a BIG fan of George Clooney, Arnie and Alicia Silverstone).

I used to watch the entertaining old Batman series on TV – yeah, the 60s version in black and white, starring Adam West. I like the *bam* and *pow* words which appear when Batman punches sumone. Very comic book-ish! But Adam West’s spare tire was amusing too… Robin was at his irritating best!

I mean, wat is there to like about Batman? How is he a “superhero” when he does not have super powers???? He does not have any “bat” powers too – like being able to fly like one or have sonar so that he can “see” in the dark!

And in the trailer, there was Liam Neeson doing a “Qui Gon Jin” performance in training Bruce Wayne.

But watched it I did, and a Batman fan I am now!

Excellent production, good performances all over – from the excellent and unrecognisable Gary Oldman to the brilliant Cillian Murphy, and the usually dependable and utterly British Michael Caine! Christian Bale was good! Believable as the tortured hero. Small roles by Linus Roache (as Bruce’s father) and Tom Wilkinson (as the gangster, Falcone) helped too. Katie Holmes was surprisingly good too!! (she's got nice eyes *swoons*). Morgan Freeman and Ken Watanabe were wasted tho.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

At least for once, we (the non-fans and the uninitiated) get to understand and appreciate why Bruce became who he did. We feel for him. I feel for him.

And being “Batman Begins”, we see a pretty vulnerable hero – as one critic said, Batman wouldn’t have made it had it not for other individuals in the movie. True. That makes Batman immediately identifiable. We emphatise wif him.

And oh – the Batmobile! WHOOOAAAA!!!!! I WANT, I WANT, I WANT!!!!

Upon much thinking, I still preferred Spiderman 2. I mean Bruce is a millionaire, he gets the models and spends money like crazy. The “good” life. He fights crime because it satisfies himself.

Peter Parker fights crime because “wif great power comes great responsibility”. Peter Parker has to struggle wif his rent. Spiderman is mostly alone all the time. Peter made the conscious decision to keep his identity a secret from Mary Jane – because he loved her (she found out, of course, but by accident). A true hero.

Bruce just simply told Rachel his true identity – no in so many words but isn’t it obvious??? Unless Rachel was an absolute fool, she would have guessed it.

In fact, I felt that Bruce’s father was more of a hero! And wat would Bruce be without the excellent Alfred? But let me not take away anything from Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne. A man who chooses to take on the impossible, to stand up for wat is right, to protect the weak and poor.

On hindsight, the plot about the “machine” used to vaporise the water is pretty unbelievable and too convenient.

Still, an excellent movie, a movie which did not depend on special effects but on the storyline and on its actors. It has got “heart”! Watch it! Be entertained. Be touched. Be inspired.

Quotes:-

When Bruce says (2 times) to Alfred, “You still haven’t given up on me?”, Alfred replies wif an emphatic “Never!

Bruce’s dad: “Why do we fall? So that we might better learn to pick ourselves up

Gordon to Batman: “But you are only one!
Batman: “Now we are two!

Trifle

In the Oxford Dictionary, a trifle can be defined as "a confection of sponge cake with custard, jelly, fruit, cream, etc.". This is a British thing - so you yanks out there won't know it!!!

Here's a pic I found online of trifle served in glasses.

Srawberry & Lemon Curd Trifle - Pic taken from Joyofbaking.com Posted by Hello

Of course, a trifle is oso defined as "a thing of slight value or importance".

Well, this post is such! It is an edition of "TTT" - Totally trivial trivia!!! It's the special Star Wars edition of the TTT. So, do you dare to "TTTTTT" ("Take The Totally Trivial Trivia Test")???

Here goes (to see the answers. run your mouse over and highlight the blank areas):-

What is the one phrase – besides “May the force be with you” – that is said in EVERY one of the Star Wars movie?

I have a bad feeling about this

Who said that phrase in each movie?

Episode 1: Obi-Wan
Episode 2: Obi-Wan & Anakin
Episode 3: Obi-Wan
Episode 4: Luke & Han
Episode 5: Leia
Episode 6: C3P0 & Leia (Han said it too but added the word “really” before “bad feeling”).

The entire Star Wars series oso had this thing about limbs being chopped off! The only movie which did not have a character wif a limb cut off is Episode 1 – but I could be wrong. Name the unfortunate characters:-

Episode 1: - (but Maul was sliced into 2!!!)
Episode 2: Zam Wessel (hand cut off by Obi-Wan), Anakin (hand cut off by Dooku). Jango Fett had his head cut off!
Episode 3: Dooku had both hands as well as his head chopped off (by Anakin), Grevious had at least 2(?) of his robotic limbs cut off by Obi-Wam, Mace Windu had one hand cut off by Anakin, Anakin had one hand and both legs sliced off – yes, by Obi-Wan again!
Episode 4: an alien in the Mos Eisley Cantina had his arm chopped off by Obi-Wan – Ponda Baba, C3P0 had his limb torn off by the sand people
Episode 5: The Wampa had his limb sliced off by Luke, C3P0 had another arm blown off when he was blasted by the Stormtroopers, Luke had his hand cut off by his father!
Episode 6: Vader has his hand cut off by Luke!

Except for C-3P0’s limbs, all other limbs were cut off using light-sabers!!!! And Obi-Wan actually considered the blaster as “uncivilised”!!! lol!!!

Ok. More trivial trivia!

Which 2 characters accused 2 other characters in which of the movies for having “…delusions of grandeur!”?

1. C-3P0 accused R2D2 in Episode 5 when R2 attempted to fix the hyperdrive in the Millennium Falcon

2. Han accused Luke in Episode 6 when he was told by Chewie that Luke is now a Jedi Knight!

Which 2 characters did not approve of discussing what in a committee in which movie?

1. Amidala would not sit back and “…watch (her) people suffer and die while (the Senate chamber) discuss this invasion in a committee.” in Episode 1;

2. Leia was objecting to Han’s decision to fly out of a “crater” on an asteroid in Episode 5 but Han cut her short by saying “No time to discuss this as a committee”!

Come on KC. I expect you to pass wif flying colours!!!

Gluttony!

If it’s possible to commit movie gluttony, then I’m guilty as charged!!!

I watched 8 movies in the span of 8 days!!! In fact, on Tuesday and Wednesday itself, I watched 4 movies!!!

And mind you – all 8 movies were really, really good! Except for Episode 3 and Alien 3. Alien 3 was better than the former!!! But Episode 3 I had to watch, as I watched the Original Trilogy after that! More about Star Wars in another blog.

This week, I watched Alien 3, Coach Carter, Batman Begins and Mr. & Mrs Smith.

Coach Carter

Excellent! Highly recommended. I missed the starting tho, no thanks to me always-and-perpetually-late mate! But he made it up by getting a t-shirt for me from Phuket!!!

Posted by Hello

In fact, thanks to this movie, I actually started to watch NBA again! I used to be an NBA fan – way, way back in those days long gone. We used to be crazy over basketball. We’d play after school ends, at bout 2 pm in the hot blazing sun!!!! I remember once when I went to get a ball from the Quarter Masters’ room, the QM teacher (who oso happen to be the infamous discipline teacher) was surprised to see me wanting to play. He’s an Indian man. So wif a smile on his face, he handed the ball to me and told me not to play in the hot sun too much or I’ll end up as dark as him!

Back to the movie. Great. It is based on this basketball coach plyed brilliantly by Samuel L. Jackson (yeah, none of the Mace Windu s***t here). He entered a contract wif his high school basketball team that they must do reasonably well in their studies in they were to play basketball. They didn’t and Carter actually banned them from playing – much to the dismay of the School board, parents and students alike as the team was playing really weel – undefeated all season!

Wat I really liked about this movie is the values it upholds. It has been so long since I watched a movie like this.

There are simple small things like how Carter refers to his students as “Sir” and speaks respectfully to them. And he teaches his students to be respectful to others too. He gave them a hard time for taunting the opposing team when they were winning easily. When one of the students said that the other team started it first, Carter told them that they did not need to carry it on. They could show class – the kinds that true champions have.

It oso emphasises on Carter’s long term vision. Sure, these kids are good in basketball but wat is even more important is their future – and that is why studies take precedence. He doesn’t want them to end up in jail or dead – as the statistics show.

Then there is the team-aspect. No divas. If one suffers, all will pay. In one wonderful scene, one of the students wanted to join the team. But he was too late. So Carter told him that if he could do all the running and push-ups which had been done (comes up to thousands!!!), he would take him in. When the student tried but couldn’t, the rest – touched by his perseverance all offered to do it for him! And they did.

Another thing was how Carter stood by his values – no matter wat happened, even when he was persecuted by the town people! There was one scene when it showed him just losing it – and you know that Sam Jackson is very good at these kinda scenes!!! I could almost feel for him – here he was, trying his best to change the lives of the students. Instead of getting applauded, he gets condemned.

***Spoiler ahead – to read, kindly use your mouse and highlight the following paragraph***

And finally, it did not have a “fairy-tale” ending. Yup, they lost their biggest match. But they won sumthing more important – the respect of their opponents, the love of their fans, the pride of their coach and the understanding of wat is more important in life.

Oh, it oso had some great basketball scenes – it was quite embarrassing but I actually reacted to some of it!!! Like the block made by Battle, one of the students. Or when the last second sky hook by Carter’s son, Damien, dropped into the basket! Whoa, I shouted wif my hands lifted up!!!! I was cheering along like crazy.

Now tt’s a good movie – if it can get me involved like that!

Quotes:-

Life is full of choices. Choose Carefully (seen on a poster in Carter’s room)

Timo Cruz: Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our dark that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people don't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. Its not just in some of us; its in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Foreign food not cooked right!

Taken from a post of me mate’s blog recently:-

Scene from a spy movie:

Spy 1 to Spy 2: Don't worry, my lips are sealed.

[Subtitle: Jangan bimbang, bibir saya macam anjing laut.]

Here was the comment I left:-

Lol!!!!

I must say tho, that the translation was pretty imaginative!

My fav was this:-

Angry man: "Carlos did not die in vain!"

I went to watch Batman Begins today. No worries – no spoilers.

Cop #1 was asking Cop #2 over the radio to describe the vehicle Batman was in, to tell him the colour and the make. Cop #2 replied that it was black in colour and had difficulty telling wat make it was. He then said, “It’s a…” but could not find the words to describe it! In the end, he just said “… tank!”

The customer is always right!

I was replying an e-mail of a mate. I was explaining to her why I’m dressed “formal” these days when I attend the Sunday service. As I started typing about it, I began to realise that I’m quite sad – I live in fear of wat others think. And tt’s so NOT me! Or is it?

Here’s an excerpt of the mail (amended a lil to protect identity of certain people):-

formal clothes? wat do u think the life chapel people will say if i go and take the emblems in me usual untucked shirt, cargo pants and timberland shoes??? sigh... have to lah. sum things have to do so as not to offend others. like i had to get a hair cut b4 i song-led for easter, not becuz i think it is not appropriate but jus so as not to offend people.

i've been thinking a lot bout it and i think my life is quite sad at times - cuz i've been trained to consider wat others say bout me.

eg:-
i'm happy being single. REALLY! but there are moments when i doubt my "happiness". at times, i think i'm happy being single cuz that way, no one has anything to talk about me. i guess certain grps of people in the church are disappointed cuz nuthing much to talk of me lately. if i do want to get close to another sister, i think twice. if people find out, the talk will start again. people will actually go and "report" me to the elders!!!

Do u know that when –deleted- and i got together and told some of my "frens", these frens quietly went to report it to the elders. how do i know? the elders told me when i was "summoned" to appear before them. They took it as an “official complaint” and a “vote of no confidence” on me as a leader.

not only that, some people - when they found out that –deleted- and i got together, they went to her and gave her warnings about me, telling her bout all the bad things i will allegedly do.

i'm a person who actually gets along better wif girls than wif guys. most of my close frens in the past are girls. but now, i have stopped developing frenships wif other sisters - or at least to always keep a "safe distance". or to be close wif those who are oredi married or attached!

heck - if sum people find out that i'm e-mailing you, they'd probably think i'm trying to ... wats the word... woo you, or court you. they'll be telling u or your parents to be careful of me!

-end of excerpt-

Oh well… just a couple more months and away I’ll go!

Freedom of choice!

I got so pissed off the other day.

We were going for lunch at The Manhattan Fish Market - me mom, me sis and me. The last time I brought me parents there and they enjoyed the food. So I thought that this time, I'll give me sis a chance to taste the food there.

As we were walking there, I was oredi thinking of the salmon they serve there. There's this Cajun salmon grilled and served wif buttered rice. Excellent!

When we got there, I suggested that me sis and me mom try the special servings for 2 that they have there - this way, they would be able to have a variety of stuffs - calamari, prawns, fish, oyster. They agreed. Good. I'll have me salmo...

Wat? No, no. I'll order sumthing else for meself, thank you. Huh?

To cut the long story short, my sister did not let me order wat I wanted. She said that the serving for 2 should be sufficient for the 3 of us.

But, but, but...

Nope. My mom was on her side!

Frustration! My salmon! So close but yet so far...

Ok - so I sulked. Yeah, I'm just a big baby.

We waited like forever for the food to come. It did take a rather long time cuz it was lunch time. When the food finally came, my sis must have felt bad and then asked if I wanted to order sumthing else.

Wat the...???? And wait for like another 30 mins or so??? Forget it.

Maybe it's cuz I'm the youngest and I'll always be treated like the baby of the family (it doesn't help if I sulk too often!!!).

But something similar happened last Saturday when I took me parents out for dinner. It was like a pre-father's day dinner. The waitress asked if we wanted to try the braised pork knuckle. I know me dad likes that. And I oso know me mom is no big fan of that. Anyways, I asked me dad if he wanted to try it. Me mom answered for him, saying "no". I ignored it and asked me dad again. Before he had the chance to say anything, me mom said "no" again. This went on for a few times. In the end, me mom got her way.

Is there sumthing in a woman which makes them have to take control of wat a man orders???? Sigh... Let us choose. Let us decide!

Still, as a happy postscript, I must say that I enjoyed the time spent wif me family - yes, even if at times, they drive me up the wall (I guess most of the time, it's the other way round! I am loved!)

My fren went to Phuket and all I got is this t-shirt:-

Please "Q" up

I complained once about Malaysians and the problem they have queuing up! Read this post from my old blog:- Waiting in line at the post office

Well, a similar thing happened again last Sunday. It was Father’s Day – but the damper bout the whole thing was that me nephew fell sick.

It was quite a concern when I got home to find that no one was in. a call to me bro’s hosue oso revealed that no one was in. Thank God for mobile phones – the whole family went to the clinic cuz me nephew was having a pretty high fever.

Anyways, we still had our Father’s Day celebration – at me bro’s palce. Me bro’s wife’s parents were around too. It was a simple do – Domino’s Pizza, home-made salad and KFC. Me sis-in-law was supposed to make sum other stuffs but couldn’t since me nephew was sick.

I was assigned the task to go and buy the KFC. Ok. The line was long. I waited patiently. Then this guy started queuing up behind me. And as if he’s too afraid that sumone else might slip in between me and him, he stood really close behind me. Yes, he was rubbing against my bag!!!

I mean, if you were Liv Tyler, then I wouldn’t mind it at all! But not this… this… fella!

Then, as the line started moving forward, he started “drifting” to me right. And by the time I reached the counter to place my order, THAT FELLA WAS STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO ME ON MY RIGHT!!!!!

A few glares to my right did not bother him at all!

Sheesh…

O well… the dinner was nice. Me nephew was matured enuf not to make a big fuss over not being able to eat all the goodies! I’m so proud of him. He came over and looked longingly at the pizza and fried chicken many times. But he never begged nor pleaded to have a taste. He just moved away quietly. Well done, boy!

After dinner, I sat around wif both set of parents and just chatted wif them.

I’ll miss this next year. :-(

Thank God for wonderful families.

p/s – me nephew is better now tho he did not go to school today nor yesterday

Seafood noodles

Oh, I had some excellent seafood noodles – at SS2, PJ!!! Ok, ok, the price is quite a killer (RM13.00 for a large bowl) but methinks it’s worth it!

Look at it this way – it had 4 big prawns, mussels, calms and squid in it. And if you really think about it, it costs less than 2 pounds! Slightly more than 3 US dollars!

Sori – was too busy enjoying it that I forgot to take a pic of it!

You can choose whatever noodles you want – rice noodles, vermicelli, normal mee, “yee mee” etc. And you can have it in 3 different kind of soup – Curry, Tom Yam, Clear Soup.

I had the curry. It was brilliant! Loved it. And the “sambal” goes so well wif it. The only slight drawback was that the curry was a bit too strong – so much so that I can’t really taste the seafood in the curry soup. Me mates had the clear soup. The soup was simply…. Whoa! It was sweet – the kind of seafood sweet taste. Lovely.

The place – free plug – you know where the Kayu Nasi Kandar place is? The one behind the old Choew Yang coffee shop? Well, this place is just a couple of doors away from Kayu.

After being stuffed wif the seafood noodles, we adjourned to Al’s place. For the aircond, mainly (curry on a hot afternoon = HOT!!!).

We oso played a new game which Al got from his cuz. Can’t remember the name of the game tho. But it was pretty interesting. It involves “building” of castles, roads, farms, monastries etc. Quite an ingenious game, I must say.

We couldn’t decide who won in the end cuz we din know how to award points for the farmland! So we took a pic of it to send it to Al’s cuz for consultation!!!

The end of the game. I'm "green" and have 2 men on the disputed farmland Posted by Hello

After that, we couldn’t pull ourselves away from the aircond so Al left us at his place when he had to go for his tennis (yeah, we of not the “in crowd” were not invited). So we just stayed on, played cards (I suck at Chor Tai Ti!!!), chatted and had tea! It was quite funny, actually. We were all pretty tired but we still “forced” ourselves to stay on for one last game, while struggling to keep awake.

I guess these are simple moments shared wif closed mates that we just wish it could go on and on.

And oh – about the toilet, well, IT WASN’T MY FAULT! Really!!!!

Oranges

Dun you just love oranges? ;-P

It’s so nice and round and juicy! Eat it fresh! And get loads of vitamin C too!

Yummy! Posted by Hello

I simply love mandarin oranges. It’s the oranges that comes in bulk during the Chinese New Year celebrations. Of course, too much of sumthing is never good – and I’ve always gotten sick after eating too much mandarin oranges! Still, I love it. I guess mandarin oranges is always associated wif Chinese New year – and Chinese New Year is always a wonderful time of family, frens, relaxation and of course, food!

The orange flavour is super oso! Orange flavoured drinks, orange cakes (I love making these kinda cakes!), orange cookies, etc. If you go to a Chinese restaurant, I’m sure you can order orange chicken too – chicken fried til its skin is crispy wif orange sauce poured over it!

Not only for food – how bout orange air-refreshener? Or orange soaps?

So dun you love oranges? I do.

p/s – this post is specially dedicated to … you know who u r! ;-)

Quiet b'day do

Burmese pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi celebrated a quiet 60th birthday do on Sunday, yesterday, while under house arrest. She has spent 10 of the last 16 years in confinement.

Read about it here.

Aung San Suu Kyi Posted by Hello

I’ve been a big “fan” of her since I read about her during my undergraduate days (yes, it has been that long!!!). She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 while under house arrest.

In fact, one year before that, the National League for Democracy Party won he general election – only for the ruling military to ignore the result.

Her future looks bleak – her release does not seem imminent - but she remains strong. I respect her for that. She is a staunch Buddhist and she, not unlike Ghandhi, advocates a type of protest that is peaceful in nature but firm in its stand.

Let us continue to remember Myanmar!

Out of order

It is SOOOOOOOO frustrating!

Something is wrong wif me "Hello" programme. I can't seem to log on for this blog! What gives? Sheessh...

I wanted to post so many... posts today but can't cuz I wan pics to go wif me posts.

In the end, wat I just did was to post the pics on me old blogs, sign in for those blogs, copy it, sign-in back to this blog and then paste it onto a new post!

Too much trouble...

Hope I figure out wat's wrong.

:-(

Sugar & Spice (Part 2)

This is the follow-up to an earlier post, Sugar & Spice.

The sugar & spice of me life! Posted by Hello

Me niece is not feeling well. She is coughing a bit. The trouble is that at times, she'll go into this coughing fit and end up throwing-up/ And of course, crying. So sad. :-(

Do pray for her.

In my earlier post stated above, I mentioned about a former employer who was... well, not so nice. The trouble was that before she revealed her true colours to me, i recommended a mate to join her on a permanent basis (as I was there as a temp and she was lloking for someone permanent).

Well, me mate agreed to join her and actually left his job. He is scheduled to start wif her next month.

However, he is prolly regretting it - and I am feeling so bad as I felt I am the cause of his problems.

She is really unethical (wat makes it worse is that she goes around potraying herself as a very committed Christian!). Example - when me mate finally went to sign the agreement wif her, he found to his horror that she has conveniently included MANY EXTRA TERMS. Terms which were never agreed upon earlier. Terms, which of course benefits her at the expense of me mate! Terms which I felt were unfair.

The thing about it is that she knew very well that he had left his previous job and he has NO CHOICE but to join her. Or be unemployed! Of course he can't choose the latter (in Malaysia, if one is unemployed, one gets no sort of imcome or payment from the government).

Sugar & spice? More like arsenic and poison!

Sori, mate. I shouldn't have recommended you to join her in the first place. :-(

Broccoli

While they were in me room today (see post below), Jon got me to play this game:-

The Sith Sense

This is a game where Darth Vader challenges to read your mind by asking you 20 questions (yeah, it’s like the “20 Questions” game – except if you win, you might find your trachea crushed…).

Try it out! Take on Darth Vader!

Guess wat? Vader only managed to read me mind after… 25? Or was it 28 questions? Bottom line is that he failed to do it in 20 questions!!! Ha! What I had in mind was “Broccoli”!

The force is strong wif me-eh? Muahahahaha!!!

Whoops! I shud know better than to laugh at the dark Lord. “My apologies, Lord Vader”.

Uhh… ahem… *gag* … help… *cough, cough*… aarrgghh…

Vader: Apology accepted!

Da, da dadum, da dadum, da dadum.

Red fruit

I was watching Star Wars episode 6 in me room when I was summoned downstairs. When I came downstairs, me dad was looking out (thru the tinted windows) in grave concern. After all, a group of rowdy looking youths had parked their car right in front of me house and they were doing weird things to me car parked outside!!!

Sigh… youths these days…

They lifted the front wipers, got junk mail outta me mailbox and “decorated" me car wif it, slipped a used canned drink on me car's back wipers and left a bunch of these funny looking red coloured fruits on top of me car!

What was left on top of me car! Posted by Hello

So wat do you think I did? Well, I got out and… I invited them into me room! ;-P

It was a bunch of crazy youths from me church along wif another mate from another church! So all 4 of 'em came into me house (stinking after a sweaty badminton game), climbed up the stairs and cramped into me humble lil room!

Hey guys, be honoured, alrite? You are few of the “chosen ones” to have entered into me room!

There they were, making a whole load of noise, running thru me stuffs, looking at me CD collection (yes, yes, I have Britney Spears albums!), going thru me books, “molesting” me action figures, sat on me bed…

So guess how I felt?

Happy! :-)

Ok, ok, I must admit it was fun having them around, albeit for just a short while!

On top of that, Jon managed to solve me “green distorted images” problem on me Windows Media Player!!! Woohoo! And now I can watch the “Lost” episodes – which incidentally was burnt for me by Jon too!

Jon – u r da man!

And thanks for dropping by, guys. Yes, I even forgive you guys for going to watch Batman without me!!!

Cold storage

This is taken from the Bar Council of Malaysia's website:-

"A total of 9 judges were today elevated to the Federal Court and the Court of Appeal. Justices Datuk Richard Malanjum, Dato' Arifin bin Zakaria, Dato' Hashim bin Dato' Haji Yusoff and Datuk Augustine Paul a/l Sinnappen were elevated to the Federal Court, and 5 other High Court judges were promoted to the Court of Appeal. They are Justices Dato' James Foong Cheng Yuen, Dato' Azmel bin Haji Maamor, Dato' Mohd Noor bin Haji Abdullah, Dato' Zaleha bt. Zahari and Dato' Zulkefli bin Ahmad Makinudin."

I better be extra careful on how I word this - lest I be charged for contempt of Court!!!

But I have to say first how glad I am that a certain High Court Judge - whom many (but does not necessarily include me) have felt been "kept in the cold storage" has finally been elevated to the Court of Appeal! My best wishes to his lordship!

But I must note that there is a certain Court of Appeal Judge who seems (IMHO but I am probably wrong) to be kept in the cold storage now as he has been a Court of Appeal Judge for very long (I believe the longest serving Court of Appeal Judge). He writes quite a lot of good judgements but yet he has not been elevated.

Personally, I have to confess that I was shocked when I heard some of the names on the list above! What gives???

Is this a signal that if Judges make the "right" decisions, they will eventually be "rewarded"? I am sure this is not the case - however, I could be wrong.

Sigh... at least there won't be any more delays in a certain High Court 3 anymore!!!

Tasteless food

How many times have we complained about the food we have? I have! Many times! Not good enuf, not cooked properly, not fresh, not salty enuf etc. Yeah, I’m quite a fussy eater. I mean I eat anything but my taste buds mite complain (it prolly will).

Anyways, I read an article today which me feel bad bout complaining.

An article in the BBC News Online highlighted the plight of inter alia this man. Read the whole article here.

U Win Tin, a journalist held since 1989, is said to be in poor health
(pic obtained from BBC News Online)
Posted by Hello

This man, U Win Tin, has “…been detained since 1989. His health is failing, yet he has sometimes been denied food and water and made to sleep without bedding in a cell designed as a dog kennel.”

It was also reported that “…Amnesty International is calling for the Burmese authorities to release all prisoners of conscience and to stop silencing political dissent”.

Let’s continue to pray for the people of Myanmar and for the political situation there, that human rights atrocities may be reduced. Let’s oso continue to pray that the gospel be preached without hindrance there.

A mate of mine will be going there with OM next month for a short term mission trip. Pray for them too!

Mango cream chocolate cake

Ever since I read bout Krissy’s gallons of mango ice cream at her house (which she din share wif me!!!!), I had this craving for mangoes. Well, it was partly satisfied last nite when I had this excellent cake – can’t remember wat its called but it’s choc cake wif mango cream on top! Brilliant stuff!

Yummy! Posted by Hello

It was actually my sis’ birthday cake. Her b’day is today but she’s at church tonite so we decided to have her cake (and eat it too!) last nite.

In fact, the “celebration” proper was done last Saturday nite when we went out for dinner, all of us. It was a nice time. The food was simply excellent (this posh Chinese joint called “Dine-Out”). After dinner, we went to the nearby shopping mall together and walked around for a bit. Nuthing spectacular but a wonderful time wif me family – as I was leading the singing and Bible Study the next day, I almost decided not to join them for the walkabout. But thankfully, I did not and joined them.

I did not get anything for me sis – except to text her a b’day message!! Poor younger brother got no money! I did pay for dinner last Saturday, tho.

Just wanna say that I’ve got a simply wonderful sister who cares a lot for me and is always ready to spend loads of money on lil younger brother! Altho she does drive me up the wall at times – but tt’s cuz little brother is dumb enuf not to appreciate the good that older sis is trying to do for him! She is super patient wif me and I respect her for that – not many people are!

She’s the closest family member to me and I pray that God will indeed continue to bless her richly in her life!
