Quiet b'day do
Burmese pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi celebrated a quiet 60th birthday do on Sunday, yesterday, while under house arrest. She has spent 10 of the last 16 years in confinement.
Read about it here.
I’ve been a big “fan” of her since I read about her during my undergraduate days (yes, it has been that long!!!). She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 while under house arrest.
In fact, one year before that, the National League for Democracy Party won he general election – only for the ruling military to ignore the result.
Her future looks bleak – her release does not seem imminent - but she remains strong. I respect her for that. She is a staunch Buddhist and she, not unlike Ghandhi, advocates a type of protest that is peaceful in nature but firm in its stand.
Let us continue to remember Myanmar!
